ARE YOU HAVING HEART PALPITATIONS?
Almost everyone experiences heart palpitations from time to time. If you experience heart palpitations, it might feel like your heart is in your throat or neck. As they worsen, you may experience them during periods of rest while sitting or lying down. Heart palpitations can affect people of all ages and ethnic background. If you experience them on a regular basis, it could be a heart condition that requires professional cardiac monitoring.
Common signs/symptoms related to having heart palpitations include:
- Uncomfortable pounding sensation
- Rapid heartbeat
- Rapid fluttering
- Your heart skipping beats
- A flip-flopping sensation
Factors that may increase your risk for heart palpitations include:
- Prescription medications/vitamins
- Vigorous exercise
- Being highly stressed
- Having an anxiety disorder
- Experiencing regular panic attacks
- Having a history of heart problems
- Being pregnant
- Taking prescription stimulants
You’re more likely to experience heart palpitations if you have an overactive thyroid gland, known as Hypothyroidism. If your palpitations are occurring because of an underlying heart condition such as Atrial Fibrillation (abnormal heart rhythm), the provider will develop a custom care plan to correct the condition and improve your quality of life.
Whenever possible, the team at Premier Cardiovascular Consultants recommends conservative therapy to ease heart palpitations. The doctor may suggest certain lifestyle changes based on level of stress, caffeine consumption, and/or the amount of rest you’re getting.
The provider will use a stethoscope to listen for palpitations or any abnormal rhythms occurring in your heart. If abnormalities are suspected, the provider may recommend having diagnostic testing (electrocardiogram [ECG], heart monitor, and/or echocardiogram) completed. Diagnostic testing provides additional information on the overall function and health of your heart.
