WHAT IS A MICROPHLEBECTOMY?
A phlebectomy is a 30–60 minute outpatient procedure that is commonly completed in the doctor's office. It is often done in conjunction with endovenous laser ablation to permanently relieve the symptoms of varicose veins and improve the appearance of your legs. It is the preferred treatment when the varicose veins are too big to be treated with sclerotherapy.
The procedure involves creating a series of small incisions into the skin around the malfunctioning veins, which will give your doctor access to the vein that needs to be removed. A phlebectomy hook is inserted through the incision to physically remove the damaged vein from the body. The body will naturally redirect blood flow to the surrounding healthy veins.
This treatment does not require sutures - you will leave the doctor's office with only small bandages placed over the incision. While you are allowed to go back to normal activities a day after the operation, you will need to wear compression stockings for at least two weeks following the surgery to prevent blood clots from developing in the leg.
You will receive specific instructions on how to prepare, including any changes you need to make to your regular medication schedule prior to the appointment. You will want to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your exam. You may need to change into a gown for the procedure.
The benefits of phlebectomy treatment:
- It is minimally invasive
- It requires little downtime, so you can return to your daily activities after the procedure
- Shorter recovery period
- Long-term results without visible scarring
- Performed on an outpatient basis
